Copying/Exporting Putty Settings to a New Computer

Here is a useful tip for Putty users.

I recently got a new computer and needed to copy my saved servers to the new computer. After some digging around, I discovered they were saved in the Windows registry. Here is how to copy your Putty settings to a new computer:

  1. On the source computer, select the “Start—> Run” menu item.
  2. Type following command:
  3. regedit /e "%userprofile%\desktop\putty.reg" HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Simontatham

  4. Copy the putty.reg file to the other computer
  5. Double-click the putty.reg file to import the Putty settings.
